Men have always known that they should be opening doors for their dates, and women graciously allowed this easy show of chivalry. Now, though, it is as risky a business as daring to answer the question “does my bum look big in this?” and may even to offend no matter what you do. Leave your date to push open the door by herself and you look like an inconsiderate oaf. But dare to hold the door back for her and you could be belittling her status as a strong, confident woman who, yes, can even open the door herself.
So what to do? The best way is to open the door for your date so unobtrusively she barely notices. Don’t make a big show of standing back, instead walk slightly ahead through the door, but hold it open after you, and then let her go on in front. It’s a smart move that is totally infallible as it looks as if it happened by chance. And it means she will get to the table first, so you won’t have to worry about whether or not to pull her chair out for her. See, this is really two problems solved in one.
